Using HECNet

Document Actions

Please note that the Web site is best viewed with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels or higher.

At the top right of the main window is a box into which you can insert a search word. Clicking the adjacent search button to the right of the box results in a search of the whole Web site for the specifed word. This will result in a list of links to pages in which the search word is present. Clicking on such a link will take you to the page in question, where the search word is highlighted in yellow wherever it occurs. If you wish to refine your search you can put more than one word in the search box, separated by the operators and and or as appropriate.

Towards the top of the main windows are a series of tabs. Clicking on these causes generic information to be displayed (their individual functions should be fairly self-explanatory).

Below these there are small window panes on the left and right hand sides, and a main window pane (like this one) in the centre, the content of which changes as you navigate around the site.

At the top right is the news pane which gives the titles of of the three latest HECNet news postings. If you put your mouse pointer over any of these entries you will be given more information about the item. Clicking on the item itself will display the full text of the item. Clicking on More... at the bottom of the pane will display all news items (as will clicking on the news tab). If you have some news about Handsworth which you would like to be included here, please e-mail it to news@handsworth.org.uk.

Below the news pane is the upcoming events pane which lists the titles of the three latest Handsworth events which have been reported to us. If you put your mouse pointer over any of these entries you will be given full information about the event. Clicking on More... at the bottom of the pane will take you the the events folder which gives details of all current events (you can also access this by clicking in the Events folder in the navigation pane (see below)). If you know of an upcoming event in Handsworth which you would like to be included here, please e-mail details to events@handsworth.org.uk.

Directly below is the BBC regional news pane which provides links to the three most recent news stories from the BBC's Web site for this region of the country (South Yorkshire). Note that this is a dynamic link to the BBC site which changes with time, indeed you might well see it change while you are using HECNet! Clicking on *More..." will take you to a page which gives a full list of current news items.

Below this is the calendar pane which shows the current month, with today's date enclosed in an orange square. You can move between months by clicking on the arrows at the top. Dates for which there is a current event are coloured blue. Putting your mouse pointer above such dates provides a summary of the associated event. Click on the date itself will link you to the event on the Events page.

To the left of the main window is the navigation pane which gives access to folders that mainly provide reference information about Handsworth. Items on this list should be fairly self-expanatory. Some of the material has been derived from the old HECNet site, but this is gradually being updated, and we will strive to enhance it and keep it up-to-date as time goes on. Note that some folders encompass sub-folders.

Of particular interest to people who have left Handsworth might be the Ex-Pats page. We would like to encourage any ex-pats who are not on the list to send us information about themseves as indicated on the page. Also, please e-mail us any changes or news about yourself, especially changes in contact details (e-mail addresses). Also, perhaps you would let us know if you are trying to find old friends or other ex-pats. We'll flag all new ex-pats, changes, and requests for information via the news page.

The navigation pane also includes the Guestbook which can be used for various purposes as described in that section.
