Guestbook

Welcome to the HECNet Guestbook. Please feel free to leave a message.

The purpose of the Guest Book is basically what the name says - a place where visitors to the Web site can "say hello", make comments, provide suggestions, etc. It can also be used by people who are wanting to trace Handsworth friends with whom they have lost touch. It is also used by visitors to the site who wish to trace their ancestors, although we suggest that the Handsworth Historical Society might also be able to help with this.

Please see our terms and conditions page for details of the way that we process submissions.

The Ellis Family

Posted by CrAIG Ellis at 15-02-2006 08:26

I have recently started to research and record my branch of the Ellis family history and have so far traced links although not complete through records and living members beyond 1800. It would seem that two generations were publicans with William John Ellis along with his wife Selina running the George Inn possibly having taken over from his Parents Mathew and Emma Ellis I am sure this building no longer exists but would be greatful for any information about its past location. I no longer Live in Yorkshire having left Sheffield to join the navy in 1977 and presently living in Lowestoft but plan to visit again in order to continue the long distance research completed at first hand. Thanks again in advance for any possible help offered.

Kenny & Mason Medical Practice

Posted by Kelly Selcher at 18-07-2005 12:43

I am looking for information on Frank Mason, M.D., who worked as a surgeon and physcian in 1901 and 1905 in Handsworth. Frank was born about 1870 in Everton, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. However, his father and most of his brothers and sisters were born in Thorne, Yorkshire. Frank was the son of Joseph Mason (born about 1837 in Thorne and died bef. 1881) and Anne Kidd (born Nov. 3, 1840, in Cawthorne, died aft. 1891). The siblings of Frank were: Joseph, Harry, and Gertrude Mary Mason. Frank's birthdate could be wrong. Frank Mason went to the University of Edinburgh around 1882. In 1891, Frank lived at 243 Hackney Rd., Haggerston, Shoreditch, London, Middlesex Co., England. He was an assistant physcian and surgeon to Major (that's his real name) Greenwood, M.D., Sr. This Major Greenwood, Sr. was the father of Major Greenwood, Jr. who later became well known in the study of disease. In 1901, Frank lived at 45 Main Rd., Haggerston, Yorkshire. He was employed as a physcian and surgeon. Frank was married to a lady named Kate F., who was born about 1872 in Rawmarsh, Yorkshire. There were no children listed. Also in the household was a domestic servant named Sarah Cowley. Frank is also listed in the directory:

White's Directory of Sheffield & Rotherham, 1905

Handsworth

Does anyone know anything about the medical practice of Kenny & Mason? Any information would be much appreciated.

Kenny, John Drought (Kenny & Mason), physician and surgeon; & at Treeton; Woodhouse & Darnall Mason Frank M.B., C.M, M.R.C.S., I.R.C.P, physician & surgeon (Kenny & Mason)

Thank You, Kelly Selcher

Fisher Son and Sibray

Posted by Kay Keeton at 14-03-2005 13:34

The reason I am writing is because I am researching a group of hollies that were proprogated at Fisher Son and Sibray, Handsworth in the 19th century, and wondered if anyone may have a copy of their catalogue produced at any time up until the time they closed.

With thanks. Kay Keeton. Friend of Sheffield Botanical Gardens.

Draper Family research

Posted by John Draper at 13-03-2005 17:32

A very good page with a lot of information. I first saw it on a link from the Genuki page. I have an interest in the area as my late father, Arthur Draper, was born there in 1907, before moving to Barnsley as a child.

I'd be interested if any other Draper families in your area have carried out any family history research.
