Remembers (people):
Loads of people off my street - the Connellys who lived at 35. They were Frances and Bernadette (twins), Patrick who was my age, and little John. Across the road were the Carriers - Richard and Robert who were also twins, and their older sister
Janice. Down the orad we had the Lowiss family and also the Billingsleys and the Beatsons. Down the road the other way was Peter Marsh and the Coopers. It was agreat street to play on with loads of kids the same age. There were four in my family. Philip Baynes, now about to move from Retford to Manchester and working on the railways, Peter Baynes who also works on the railways and lives in Devon, Helen Baynes who is in Doncaster and me. We lived in Handsworth until 1977 when we moved to Worksop.
Remembers (places):
Mr Connelly making a go kart out of an old coal house door with castors on and us storming down the road on it until
someone complained. I remember going down to Gowers and Burgons on Richmond Road which was in the same row of shops as Mrs Wrestle which then became Vines. And there was Marsdens on the corner and Hoggs on the Top Road (as we called Handsworth Road). I was baptised in the church and remember Rev Ferraby. From Athelstan I remember Mrs Leader who used to make us wash our hands at lunchtime!
