Pupils and staff from Athelstan School - I still have a class photo or two. To name just a few - (pupils) Allan Phillips, Janet Pratt, David Wright, Christine Stringfellow, Robert Nicholson, Geraldine Ellis, Geoffrey Wanless, (staff) John Trusswell (this guy was probably the reason why I entered a career in scientific research), Mr. Thomas (headmaster), Mr. Deakin, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Whatam. Friends and neighbours - John and Julie Farrington, Susan and Anne Phillipson, David Clarke, Leonard Allison, Meg and Jim (Thomson?)
Remembers (places):
Monthly visits to "Bozzy's" Barber's shop; the last tram cars (around 1960?); "the woods" before they built the Parkway (best conkers in Sheffield); the pit ponies in the "top field" (end of Hall Road) before they built the Parkway; helping to mount the visiting fairground in the same field (August); hot Vimto cordial in the High Hazels Park Café on Winter's days; fish and chips from the "Triangle Fish Bar", Willow Drive.
Comments:
It really was a most pleasant surprise to discover a Handsworth site on the WWW! Better still, to know that it is a site which is being organized by a community group with a true eye to the future who taking concrete initiatives at a local level to guarantee not only the "community spirit" which has for so long been a part of "village" life there, but also economic well-being (tempered by a sensible level of environmental control). I shall certainly continue to visit your site - sincere best
wishes and warm regards.
